The establishing shot of the video is in a hotel room, with the vocalist/guitarist, Simon Neil, lying on his bed. The fact that they use Neil as the narrator amplifies the storyline and gives a more personal viewpoint to the audience.
The camera cuts to the phone, where he picks it up and has an angry expression as he hears the news- "maybe there's an undertow here, or maybe this is stuck up in the air", this seems to be him doubting the words he's heard; inferring that the song is about a break up.
We then see Neil pushing the seemingly innocent man into the water and vandalising the motel. This is showing one side to his reaction of the break up.
We then see a gang that start to follow him with bats, and are preparing to hit him as the lyrics say...
"Baby if you could would you go back to the start?" The video then amplifies these lyrics by taking the literal meaning and physically taking the video to the start again.
This time round, he starts to do good things, pulling the child out of the pool and giving the receptionist a wad of money.
Even though he has changed his actions, he is still hit by the group and left on the ground to suffer.
We then see that he gets up, to the lyrics "baby how can you walk away, baby how can you walk away..." and he is smiling, the sun in the background sheds a positive, uplifting light on the video, and the lyrics help to amplify the sadness he feels and the suffering he's had- however, this particular bit is saying that no matter how much your life throws at you, you still have the option to beat it at it's own game- to do good things and see things in a much more positive light.
The video then takes us back to the start again as the lyrics say "baby if you could would you go back to the start?", again amplifying the lyrics, and the video ends with the sound of the phone ringing, telling the audience that the same thing is going to happen... but how will it be handled differently this time?
